Taraxicum Officinale – Dandelion

Generally understood as a weed, Dandelion is actually carries a host of medicinal properties (as well as bringing a pleasant addition to a Mead!) Dandelion is shown to act as a powerful diuretic and when used holistically, serves as a potent “blood purifier” and stimulates the kidneys, gall bladder, and liver, functioning to increase waste removal from the body (good for hangovers).

This effect seems to be caused by its potassium content and makes it especially useful in chronic diseases involving perpetual toxicity. It also may improve digestion, appetite, and serve as a mild laxative. Often taken as a tonic for liver problems and to protect and strengthen it.

Its high potassium content means that it acts as a balanced diuretic. May also increase the removal of uric acid, a factor in some arthritis and carries some activity against some tumors and cancers especially of the breast.

A 2004 study showed it had marked anticancer activity, significantly increasing tumor necrosis factor and apoptosis (programmed cell death). A methanol extraction showed it was more efficient than an ethanol extraction in “inhibiting breast cancer stem cell proliferation”. Though both were effective. (A Spagyric is in part an Ethanol extract).

It can be eaten raw and is especially supportive as a tonic and very nutritious. The Dandelion is also taken as a good probiotic for the gut flora.

Although it is classified as a diuretic, more specifically it is an Aquaretic, which promotes the excretion of water without electrolyte loss.  It can treat high blood pressure by reducing the water in the body.

Sacred to the Greek lunar goddess Hecate, the root is used to invoke spirits and egregores to bind and serve as doorways to other all-knowing intelligences. It is said to increase psychic powers, something the moon is described for governing.
